[Cleaning Guide] How to Deep Clean Your Bathroom

By Madison Johnson Fri, Aug 30, 2024

Welcome to our comprehensive room-by-room cleaning guide! In this series, we’re diving deep into each space of your home to help you achieve a sparkling clean environment, starting with one of the most essential areas: the bathroom.

A clean bathroom not only enhances your home’s hygiene but also creates a refreshing and pleasant space to start and end your day. From tackling stubborn soap scum to ensuring every surface gleams, we’ll guide you through every step of a thorough bathroom deep clean. Get ready to transform your bathroom into a spotless sanctuary, where every corner shines with cleanliness.

Let’s get started!

1. Scrub All Showers, Bathtubs, Sinks, and Toilets

Start by applying a multipurpose cleaner to your tub, sinks, and toilet bowls. Let the cleaner sit and break down soap scum and oil buildup. Once the cleaner has had time to work, scrub each surface thoroughly. For tough stains and buildup, use a non-abrasive brush or sponge. Pay special attention to the base of the toilet near the floor, where dust and dribbles can accumulate.

Tip: For an extra touch of cleanliness, wipe down the base of the toilet with a damp cloth to catch any dust or dribbles that may have settled there.

2. Wipe Down Light Fixtures, Mirrors, and Window Treatments

Clean light fixtures, mirrors, and window treatments by removing dust and grime. Use a mixture of vinegar and water on a damp rag to wipe down these surfaces, paying close attention to corners and edges where gunk tends to accumulate.

3. Wash Glass Shower Doors

For soap scum and water spots on glass shower doors, apply warm distilled white vinegar and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Reapply if needed. Sprinkle baking soda over the vinegar and gently scrub the spots away. For a quick fix, a slightly damp dryer sheet can also help remove buildup.

Tip: Dryer sheets can be an effective alternative for removing soap scum and buildup from glass shower doors.

4. Toss Cloth Curtains and Bath Mats in the Washing Machine

Check the care tags on cloth curtains and bath mats to determine the appropriate washing cycle. To avoid wrinkles, use a low heat setting in the dryer and remove items while they are still slightly damp. Hang them back up in the shower to finish drying. For plastic shower curtain liners, wash in cold water and either rehang to dry or replace with a new one.

5. Clean Out Under the Sinks and Inside Drawers

Remove all items from under the sinks and inside bathroom drawers. Wipe down the interior surfaces and remove any cobwebs or accumulated debris. Discard expired or unused items and organize what remains, placing frequently used items near the front for easy access.

6. Don’t Forget the Grout

Create a homemade grout cleaner by mixing vinegar, baking soda, and water. Spray the grout with a half-vinegar, half-water solution until saturated. Let it sit for a few minutes, scrub with a bristled brush, and rinse. For additional cleaning power, apply a paste made from baking soda and water, spray with the vinegar solution, and scrub again. Rinse with warm water to remove any remaining grime.

Tip: Carpet cleaner can also be used effectively on grout if you need an alternative solution.

7. Disinfect Handles and Doorknobs

Handles and doorknobs are often overlooked but can harbor a lot of germs. Clean these high-touch areas thoroughly with a multipurpose cleaner or disinfectant wipes to ensure they are free from bacteria.

With these detailed steps, you’ll ensure that your bathroom is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Enjoy your refreshed and sparkling space!
