Lonely Duck Thrives with New Companions

Copyright Source: Yueke Thu, May 16, 2024
Meet Honey, a duck who lives in a small town in Washington with her family, their dogs, and other ducks.
Honey was born with a kink in her neck because a previous caretaker didn’t provide enough nutrients during incubation. Fortunately, this condition isn’t painful, and as her mom, Alma Ackermann, told The Dodo, Honey lives a “healthy, happy life.”
However, Honey’s disability has led the other ducks to exclude her from mealtimes and social activities.
To ensure Honey didn’t feel too lonely, Ackermann introduced her to the 4-week-old puppies she was raising. She wasn’t sure how they would interact but decided it was worth a try.
To her delight, Honey and the puppies were instantly smitten with each other. When they first met, the puppies jumped around Honey, sniffing her and wagging their tails. Honey seemed overwhelmed with joy at the affection they showed her.
“She just wanted to love them,” Ackermann shared.
Ackermann believes one reason for their bond is their similar height. Due to the kink in her neck, Honey can’t stretch as tall as the other ducks, but she and the puppies are at the same level.
Additionally, Honey has always had a sweet, puppy-like personality, making her fit right in. She loves running up to people to greet them, just like a puppy.
Now, Honey spends time with the puppies every day, caring for them and grooming them like a mother would.
“[She] feels like [their] mommy,” Ackermann said.
Honey has even adopted some puppy-like behaviors. When excited, she wags her tail, much like her canine friends.
Seeing Honey embrace the puppies has been heartwarming for Ackermann. Despite not feeling included by her own kind, the puppies gave Honey a chance to feel loved.
“I always say, every animal deserves a chance,” Ackermann said.
NEXT: Abandoned Mama Dog and Her 12 Puppies Find Hope with Rescue Group
When One of A Kind Pet Rescue heard about Violet’s story, their hearts broke for her. The sweet mama dog had been abandoned after giving birth to a large litter of 12 puppies, which evidently proved too much for her former family. Faced with an unthinkable situation, they left her behind. "I was contacted by a woman in Columbus who is a friend of my daughter," Tanya Jonda, executive director of One of A Kind Pet Rescue, told The Dodo. "She took the mama and puppies in after seeing a post on Facebook by someone who claimed they were dumped on their property." Despite knowing the challenge ahead, Jonda couldn’t refuse to help Violet and her brood, so she immediately agreed to take them all in. When Violet arrived, she was incredibly thin, blind in one eye, and covered in fleas. Nonetheless, she remained a terrific mom to all 12 of her puppies and seemed grateful for the assistance in keeping them safe. “They were incredibly healthy, which we attribute to Violet caring for them so well,” Jonda said. “We gave the puppies names that start with ‘V.’ For being such a large litter, they get along very well and always pile up together when sleeping, perhaps due to their abandonment and need for comfort.” Since their rescue, the puppies have thrived and are growing into healthy, energetic dogs. Six have already been adopted, leaving half of the group — and their mom — still looking for homes. “Violet is a lovely girl with a wonderful disposition,” Jonda said. “She loves all people and other dogs. She was a wonderful mother and is scheduled to receive her vetting the first week of May. She will then be available for adoption.” Despite their rough start, Violet and her puppies are now thriving and eagerly await their loving forever homes.

Expert Tips for Controlling Oily Skin

Managing oily skin can be especially challenging during warmer months. While mattifying makeup and oil-absorbing sheets offer temporary relief, effective skincare requires a thoughtful approach to cleansing and hydration. Here’s what skincare experts recommend: Avoid Harsh Cleansers Opting for harsh, oil-free cleansers may seem logical, but it can backfire. Ada Ooi, a facialist and founder of 001 Skincare, explains that stripping the skin of natural oils can damage the moisture barrier, leading to dehydration and increased sebum production. This creates a cycle of more oiliness. Instead, Ooi recommends using an oil-based cleanser to attract and break down excess sebum, keeping the skin hydrated and balanced. Gentle Cleansing is Key Izabela Pawlitka, a skincare specialist at Dr. David Jack, emphasizes the importance of a gentle cleanser that removes makeup, sunscreen, and dirt without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Look for cleansers with mild exfoliants like lactic acid or salicylic acid to support your skin without causing tightness or dryness. Prioritize Moisture and Sun Protection Despite the trend of layering multiple skincare products, those with oily skin should focus on essentials. Pawlitka suggests using an antioxidant serum followed by a moisturizer with SPF 50 during the day. For nighttime, a light moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, and ceramides is ideal for maintaining hydration. Consistent Hydration Julia Vearncombe, founder of skin , notes that avoiding moisturizers can worsen oiliness. Using a moisturizer like macadamia oil, which mimics sebum, can signal the body to reduce oil production, helping to manage oily skin. Lifestyle Factors Matter Ada Ooi highlights that diet, stress, and hormonal imbalances also influence sebum production. Diets high in greasy foods, refined sugars, and dairy can disrupt balance, while stress and hormonal changes can increase oil production. Addressing these lifestyle factors is crucial for managing oily skin effectively. In summary, managing oily skin involves gentle cleansing, proper hydration, and considering lifestyle factors. Opt for mild exfoliants, use lightweight moisturizers, and protect your skin with SPF. Consistency and a balanced approach are key to achieving healthy, well-managed skin.

Rising Rates of PTSD and Anxiety Among College Students

Stress levels among America's college students are soaring, with a new report revealing a significant increase in cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and acute stress disorder (ASD) across campuses nationwide. Led by Yusan Zhai from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the study found a marked rise in PTSD and ASD prevalence in a national sample of U.S. college students. The findings, published in JAMA Network Open, showed PTSD rates rose by 4.1 percentage points and ASD diagnoses by 0.5 percentage points between 2017 and 2022. The research team highlighted various triggers for these disorders, including campus shootings, sexual assault, physical violence, and natural disasters. PTSD can cause long-lasting symptoms, while ASD typically affects individuals for a shorter period, ranging from a few days to a month. The study analyzed data from the Healthy Minds study, which monitors the mental health of over 392,000 students from 332 colleges and universities across the United States. The sample was predominantly female (58%). During the study period, 19,349 students (4.9%) were diagnosed with PTSD, and 1,814 (0.5%) with ASD. The prevalence of PTSD increased from 3.4% in 2017-2018 to 7.5% in 2021-2022, while ASD rose from 0.2% to 0.7%. Although the study did not pinpoint specific causes, the researchers suggested that pandemic-related losses, campus shootings, and racial trauma might be contributing factors. The study underscored the escalating mental health challenges faced by college students, aligning with recent research indicating a rise in psychiatric diagnoses. The findings emphasize the urgent need for targeted, trauma-informed prevention and intervention strategies by mental health professionals and policymakers to support affected students, the researchers concluded.

Identifying Unidentified Online Creatures 1

Every day, I see all sorts of sensational stuff online – today it's unknown creatures, tomorrow it's mysterious beasts. And there's always a crowd of clueless folks racking up hundreds of thousands of views. Look, I don't know if there are really unknown creatures or divine blessings out there, but as a hot-headed biology student, I'm starting a column to debunk these viral mystical creatures. First up, let's talk about the fearsome-looking animal with big teeth. It's a baboon called the Gelada. These guys live in the high mountains of Ethiopia. Don’t assume it's always hot in Africa; these baboons can be found at altitudes above 13,000 feet where it gets pretty cold, hence the thick fur, particularly on the males. This species is now very rare, so to all those keyboard warriors who think they can take on one of these beasts, save your breath.

Giant 6,000-pound sunfish sets world record as largest bony fish: report

A giant ocean sunfish weighing more than 6,000 pounds was found in Portugal, setting a record for being the largest bony fish known to man, according to a recent report. The deceased fish was discovered afloat near Faial Island, a Portuguese island located within the Azores archipelago of the central North Atlantic, according to the Atlantic Naturalist Association, a nonprofit conservation research and education organization for the Atlantic Region. The ocean-monitoring organization’s press release, dated Oct. 13, 2022, states the record-breaking fish was found on Dec. 9, 2021, and weighed 6,049.48 pounds (2,744 kilograms). It also measured about 11.8 feet (3.59 meters) in height and 10.7 feet (3.25 meters) in length, according to the Atlantic Naturalist’s report, which was recently published in the Journal of Fish Biology. Researchers from the Atlantic Naturalist Association and Azores University conducted a stomach content search and DNA analysis to gather biometrical and morphological data from the dead sunfish, but the fish’s sex couldn’t be determined, according to the Atlantic Naturalist’s six-page report. The sunfish is a Mola alexandrini variety, also known as a Ramsay's sunfish, southern ocean sunfish, or bump-head sunfish in many parts of the world, according to the Australian Museum. Mola alexandrini are typically found in temperate and tropical waters in the Southern Hemisphere, the museum reports, though some might inhabit or swim to the Northern Hemisphere. The southern species falls under the larger Molidae family, which is colloquially known as ocean sunfish or mola mola, according to FishBase, a global fish species database. Ocean sunfish are reportedly distinguished by their short bodies that abruptly end behind their dorsal and anal fins, giving them a half-fish appearance. The fish also have skeletal bones instead of cartilage, as seen in sharks and rays, and can weigh hundreds or thousands of pounds, according to National Geographic. Classification profiles on FishBase list the overall ocean sunfish population as "vulnerable" and the Mola alexandrini population as having "very high vulnerability." The dead sunfish found in 2021 had a "white coloration and punctured eyes" and a "large contusion" on the right side of its head with "remains of brick red antifouling paint" that are typically found on keelboats, but it's not known if the injury occurred before or after death, the Atlantic Naturalist Association’s published report states.     "The cause of death remains uncertain," Atlantic Naturalist wrote. The organization noted that the Mola alexandrini sunfish found in Portugal beat the previous Mola alexandrini sunfish world record from 1996, which was found in Kamogawa, Japan, and weighed approximately 5,070.6 pounds (2,300 kilograms). Guinness World Records has yet to update its "heaviest bony fish" record online. "These findings not only help us understand the role of invertebrate feeding species in marine ecosystems, but also show that the ocean is still healthy enough to support the world's largest animals," Atlantic Naturalist wrote in its press release. "However, they raise concerns about the need for additional conservation measures regarding ocean pollution and habitat protection." Copyright Source: Yueke

Colorado wildlife authorities to kill reservoir fish and restock with native trout in new restoration project

A restoration project is underway that will reintroduce native Rio Grande cutthroat trout to the area, but all other fish will be eradicated. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) announced on Thursday, July 13, that the Rito Hondo Reservoir, located west of Creede, a statutory town in Mineral County, has been lowered for dam repair work. This will be followed by a rotenone treatment to "remove non-native brook trout." Rotenone is a broad-spectrum insecticide and herbicide derived from jicama vine plants and many Fabaceae plants. According to the National Library of Medicine’s PubChem, a chemical glossary associated with the National Center for Biotechnology Information, it is also used as a piscicide. The CPW plans to conduct the rotenone treatment beginning the week of July 24 and stock the Rito Hondo Reservoir with native Rio Grande cutthroat trout by summer 2024. The Colorado wildlife agency is partnering with the U.S. Forest Service and the San Luis Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited to carry out the restoration project. Roads throughout the Divide Ranger District have been closed along with the dam’s surrounding area, according to CPW. The Rito Hondo Reservoir will remain fish-free through the winter and will be refilled "following spring runoff in 2024," the wildlife agency’s news release stated.    "The reservoir being drained for repairs gives us the opportunity to treat the reservoir itself and the stream above it without having to treat the whole lake," Estevan Vigil, an aquatic biologist with the CPW, said in a statement. "The coolest thing about this project is that it’s popping up out of nowhere and providing another lake that can grow really good trout. We anticipate this being a great success," he continued. "We hope to establish this as a broodstock lake to get more Rio Grande cutthroat eggs for stocking across the San Luis Valley." Vigil said it could take three to five years for cutthroat trout to establish a stable population. Removal of other fish is necessary because non-native trout compete with, prey on, and sometimes hybridize with Rio Grande cutthroat trout, according to the CPW. The CPW says rotenone is a "registered piscicide" with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has historically "been used by indigenous peoples to capture fish." The chemical has been "successfully used" by the CPW and other state fish and game agencies for more than 80 years, according to the CPW’s news release. Rotenone is used around the world for fish management and reportedly poses minimal risk to humans and invertebrates when used properly, according to the CPW. The CPW noted that it’s also working on other fish restoration projects throughout the state. Rio Grande cutthroat trout are one of three native trout species indigenous to Colorado. The other two species include Colorado River cutthroat trout, which are native to Colorado’s Western Slope, and Greenback cutthroat trout, which are native to parts of Colorado’s Front Range – a mountain range that’s part of the Rocky Mountains. Colorado residents and visitors who want to stay up to date on the Rito Hondo Reservoir and Rio Grande National Forest closures can visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service website at fs.usda.gov.
